It reads the conversations and attachments displayed in your own, already signed-in Google Messages for Web session (messages.google.com) in order to send them to your phone, and it uses a small pairing page on smsbackup.gilapps.com to connect your browser and your phone.
Your messages and media are sent directly to your phone over an end-to-end encrypted, peer-to-peer connection (WebRTC, or an encrypted fallback that uses our server only to relay already-encrypted bytes). Message content is never uploaded to, stored on, logged by, or readable by our servers. The server is used only to introduce your browser and phone to each other (a short pairing code) and to relay the encrypted connection handshake.
On your computer only, in the browser's local extension storage: your pairing code, your sync preferences, and a small record of what was already synced so only new messages are sent next time. This never leaves your browser except as part of the encrypted transfer to your own phone. On our servers: nothing about your messages — no message content, no contacts, no attachments, no analytics about your conversations.
We do not sell or share your data with third parties. We do not use your data for advertising or any purpose unrelated to syncing your messages to your own phone. We do not collect your browsing history or activity on other sites.
