Attenuator & auto headroom

A simple "make room" control. If heavy EQ boosts or bass make the sound crackle, the Attenuator quietly turns the incoming level down a touch first, leaving room for those boosts so nothing distorts. It can do this automatically.

Premium feature. Unlock it with a Premium subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase via Google Play.

How it works

Picture a glass filled almost to the top: add more and it overflows. Audio is similar — if you boost a lot, the sound can "overflow" its maximum and distort. The fix is to start with the glass a little less full.

The Attenuator lowers the incoming level by a small amount before any EQ or effects run, leaving headroom (spare loudness room) for your boosts. Turn on Auto and the app works out exactly how much room your settings need and trims accordingly; or set the amount yourself.

What you can use it for on your phone

  • Stacking big EQ boosts or strong Bass Boost without getting crunchy distortion.
  • A "set and forget" fix if loud tracks sound harsh once you've tuned the sound.

How to use it

Turn on Auto to let AudioMatch trim exactly the right amount for your current effects. Or turn Auto off and set the Attenuation by hand — increase it if heavy EQ or bass causes clipping or harshness. (Advanced interface.)

Why it helps

It prevents the internal "overflow" distortion that stacked boosts can cause, keeping the sound clean instead of crunchy — without you having to lower every boost by hand.

Settings explained

  • Auto — Lets the app calculate and apply exactly the trim your effects need; the manual slider hides while it's on. The easy choice.
  • Attenuation — The manual amount to turn the input down, in dB, before the chain (−24 to 0; default −3). More negative = more headroom.
